The response of the tropical ocean to global climate change and the extent of sea ice in the glacial nordic seas belong to the great controversies in paleoclimatology. Our new reconstruction of peak glacial sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the Atlantic is based on census counts of planktic foraminifera, using the Maximum Similarity Technique Version 28 (SIMMAX-28) modern analog technique with 947 modern analog samples and 119 well-dated sediment cores.

Detrital modes for the sand-size fraction in 24 samples from the CRP-1 drillcore are described. Most samples are largely composed of quartzo-feldspathic detritus sourced dominantly from Palaeozoic granitoids and quartzose sedimentary sequences. Minor contributions from basic lamprophyre dykes, felsic dykes and possibly Kirkpatrick basalts are also identified as detrital components for the first time. The provenance also included a minor outcrop area of high-grade metamorphic rocks. Detritus derived from a Ferrar dolerite source is common throughout.

We present a detailed palaeoclimate analysis of the Middle Miocene (uppermost Badenian-lowermost Sarmatian) Schrotzburg locality in S Germany, based on the fossil macro- and micro-flora, using four different methods for the estimation of palaeoclimate parameters: the coexistence approach (CA), leaf margin analysis (LMA), the Climate-Leaf Analysis Multivariate Program (CLAMP), as well as a recently developed multivariate leaf physiognomic approach based on an European calibration dataset (ELPA).

We examined geophysical data from a Multi-Sensor Core Logger (MSCL), a logging device providing continuous measurements of gamma-ray attenuation, p-wave travel time, and magnetic susceptibility on marine sediment cores. In the first part we focused on the gamma-ray system and compared two different calibration methods. From the gamma-ray attenuation, we calculated densities and porosities by incorporating mass weighted attenuation coefficients. The application of an iteration method reduces the error of the density and porosity estimates compared to GRAPE data.

In order to reconstruct Late Quatemary variations of surface oceanography in the eastequatorial South Atlantic, time series of sea-surface temperatures (SST) and paleoproductivity were established from cores recovered in the Guinea and Angola Basins, and at the Walvis Ridge. These records, based on sedimentary alkenone and organic carbon concentrations, reveal that during the last 350,000 years surface circulation and productivity changes in the east-equatorial South Atlantic were highiy sensitive to climate forcing at 23- and 100-kyr periodicities.

Rhaetian fossil reef was penetrated on the Wombat Plateau (northern Exmouth Plateau, northwest Australia). A study of fossil populations and associated sediment types showed a vertical transition from a sponge-dominated to a coral-dominated community, with associated hydrozoans-tabulozoans. The first colonization of the mobile ground was undertaken by sponges, whereas the coral community assemblage constituted the main core of a pinnacle reef complex, dominated by Retiophyllia in the lower part and by Astreomorpha associations upward.

Downcore cyclic variation in high-resolution nannofossil abundance records from mid-Pliocene equatorial Atlantic ODP Sites 662 and 926 demonstrate the direct response by several Pliocene taxa (notably Discoaster, Sphenolithus and Florisphaera profunda) to orbitally forced climatic variation.

In the years 2000 and 2001 we measured methane concentrations exceeding up to two orders of magnitude the equilibrium with the atmosphere in the water column on the SW-Spitsbergen continental shelf. This methane anomaly extended from its centre on the shelf westwards over the upper slope and eastwards well into the inner basins of the two southernmost Spitsbergen fjords, the Hornsundfjord and the van Mijenfjord. Methane concentrations and stable carbon isotopic ratios varied between 2 and 240 nM, and between -53 per mil and -20 per mil VPDB, respectively.

Significant variations in the isotopic composition of marine calcium have occurred over the last 80 million years. These variations reflect deviations in the balance between inputs of calcium to the ocean from weathering and outputs due to carbonate sedimentation, processes that are important in controlling the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and, hence, global climate. The calcium isotopic ratio of paleo-seawater is an indicator of past changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide when coupled with determinations of paleo-pH.

The last glacial maximum (LGM) of the Scandinavian ice sheet in the Arkhangelsk region has been identified morphologically as ridges and hummocks in an otherwise flat topography. Stratigraphically the limit is marked by the presence of till above Mikhulinian (last interglacial) sediments inside the ridges and by the absence of till outside the ridges. During the LGM, ice flowed into the region from the north and northwest forming a lobe in the Dvina-Vaga depression.
