Antarctic Ocean

Strontium isotopic compositions of acetic acid (HOAc) leachate fractions of eight manganese oxide deposits from the modern seafloor, and of twenty-one buried manganese nodules from Cretaceous to Recent sediments in DSDP/ODP cores were measured. ratios of HOAc leachates in all modern seafloor manganese oxides of various origins are identical with present seawater.

Young specimens of cf. Pagothenia borchgrevinki were observed for the first time to cling to the subsurface of the marginal ice shelf in Drescher Inlet, southeastern Weddell Sea. Along an approximately 40-m-long videotransect at 80 m water depth, the abundance was roughly estimated to be 7 individuals per 10 m**2. This behaviour is interpreted to represent the most advanced adaptation to ice as a microhabitat for Antarctic fish.

The Southern Ocean (SO) plays a key role in modulating atmospheric CO2 via physical and biological processes. However, over much of the SO, biological activity is iron-limited. New in situ data from the Antarctic zone south of Africa in a region centred at ~20-25?E, reveal a previously overlooked region of high primary production, comparable in size to the Northwest African upwelling region. Here, sea ice together with enclosed icebergs is channelled by prevailing winds to the eastern boundary of the Weddell Gyre, where a sharp transition to warmer waters causes melting.

Sediments in the southeast Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean were cored during Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 177 to study the paleoceanographic history of the Antarctic region on short (millennial) to long (Cenozoic) timescales. Seven sites were drilled along a north-south transect across the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) from 41? to 53?S.

The R.V. Polarstern cruise ANT X/6, part of the international Southern Ocean JGOFS programme, investigated phytoplankton spring bloom development and its biogeochemical effects in different water masses of the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean: the Polar Frontal region (PFr), the southern Antarctic Circumpolar Current zone (sACC), its boundary with the Weddell Gyre (AWB) and the marginal ice zone (MIZ). The relative roles of physical stability, iron limitation and grazing pressure in enhancing or constraining phytoplankton biomass accumulation were examined.

During the ANT V14 (1986187) and ANT V113 (1987188) cruises of R.V. Polarstern sedirnents from the eastern, southern and central Weddell Sea were sarnpled with a boxcorer andlor a multicorer. The 24 sampling locations are distributed over the whole depth range, from shelf to pelagic environments. Porewater concentrations of aluminium, fluoride, manganese, nitrate, nitrite, oxygen and silicate, the pH and the alkalinity were measured. Of the sediment the opal, calcium carbonate and organic carbon content were quantified. The 210Pb-profile was measured for three sedirnent cores.

The evolution of the Southern Ocean climate during the late Eocene-late Oligocene interval is examined through highresolution, quantitative calcareous nannofossil analyses on samples from the Southern Ocean sections on Maud Rise and Kerguelen Plateau. We determined the abundance patterns of the counted species to clarify the biostratigraphy, which we correlated with high-resolution magnetostratigraphy [Roberts, A.P., Bicknell, S.J., Byatt, J., Bohaty, S.M., Florindo, F., Harwood, D.M., 2003a.

The most direct method of investigating past variations of the atmospheric CO2 concentration before 1958, when continuous direct atmospheric CO2 measurements started, is the analysis of air extracted from suitable ice cores. Here we present a new detailed CO2 record from the Dronning Maud Land (DML) ice core, drilled in the framework of the European Project for Ice Coring in Antarctica (EPICA) and some new measurements on a previously drilled ice core from the South Pole.

At Ocean Drilling Program Site 689 (Maud Rise, Southern Ocean), d18O records of fine-fraction bulk carbonate and benthic foraminifers indicate that accelerated climate cooling took place following at least two closely spaced early late Eocene extraterrestrial impact events. A simultaneous surface-water productivity increase, as interpreted from d13C data, is explained by enhanced water-column mixing due to increased latitudinal temperature gradients.

Measurements of delta 13C, delta 15N, and C/N on diatom-bound organic matter were made over the Holocene and Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) from 3 piston cores in the Southern Ocean, one from each of the three sectors. The site in the Scotia Sea differed considerably from the other two sites by having markedly lower delta 13C, more variable delta 15N and C/N ratios, and a sedimentary diatom assemblage that was never dominated by Fragilariopsis kerguelensis. Although environmental parameters certainly have a strong impact on the isotope ratios, delta 13C is also correlated to the proportion of F.
