Atlantic Ocean

A total of 58 productive samples have been palynologically analyzed from the upper Miocene and lowermost Pliocene of Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Hole 646B in the central Labrador Sea. Pollen and spores are a major component of the assemblages and indicate a temperate-source vegetation, although they mainly comprise forms that are longranging in high latitudes. Reworking may account for some of these forms. A diverse marine palyno flora (70 taxa) was recovered, and five provisional dinocyst assemblage zones are erected.

Detailed pollen analyses and oxygen isotope records of three foraminiferal species, Globigerina bulloides, Uvigerina peregrina and Cibicides pachyderma, from the Semaforo and Vrica composite sections (Crotone, southern Italy) have been compared to the global climatic changes depicted by late Pliocene-early Pleistocene foraminiferal d18O records of Site 607 in the North Atlantic, and Hole 653A in the Tyrrhenian basin, West Mediterranean.

The glacial to interglacial delta13C records of the benthic foraminifera Cibicidoides wuellerstorfi and the Uvigerina peregrina group from deep-sea cores cannot be adjusted by a generally valid constant. The delta13C values of the U. peregrina group largely correlate with the accumulation rates of organic carbon, suggesting a local "habitat effect"; those of C. wuellerstorfi vary independently with respect to the carbon flux and record fluctuations in the delta13C of the ambient bottom water isotopic composition.

Between January 1990 and March 1995, the research project KERFIX undertook the first regular noncoastal multiyear acquisition of parameters related to the carbon cycle in the Southern Ocean at a time series station located at 50?40' S-68?25' E, 60 miles southwest of the Kerguelen Islands.

The relationship between mesoscale hydrodynamics and the distribution of large particulate matter (LPM, particles larger than 200 ?m) in the first 1000 m of the Western Mediterranean basin was studied with a microprocessor-driven CTD-video package, the Underwater Video Profiler (UVP). Observations made during the last decade showed that, in late spring and summer, LPM concentration was high in the coastal part of the Western Mediterranean basin at the shelf break and near the continental slope (computed maximum: 149 ?g C/l between 0 and 100 m near the Spanish coast of the Gibraltar Strait).

We generated benthic isotope records from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) site 981 on the Feni drift (2173 m water depth) and from ODP site 983 on the Gardar drift (1983 m water depth) to examine the interaction between North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) and Glacial North Atlantic Intermediate Water (GNAIW) formation from 2.0 to 1.4 Ma. We find NADW at both sites during interglacial periods, and a mix of NADW and Southern Ocean water at the Feini drift during most glacial periods. Prior to 1.7 Ma we find no evidence ofr GNAIW at the Gardar drift site.

Late Quaternary summer sea surface temperatures (SSTs) have been derived from radiolarian assemblages in the East Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean. In the subantarctic and the polar frontal zone, glacial SSTs (oxygen isotope stages 2, 4, 6, and 8) were 3?-5?C cooler than today, indicating northward displacements of the isotherms about 2?-4? of latitudes. During interglacials, SSTs almost reached modern levels (oxygen isotope stages 7 and 9) or exceeded them by 2?-3?C (oxygen isotope stages 1 and 5.5).

Studies of the late Miocene-early Pliocene biogenic bloom typically have focused on high-productivity areas in the Indian and Pacific Oceans in order to achieve high resolution samples. Thus there is a paucity of information concerning whether the Atlantic Ocean, in general or low-productivity regions in all three basins experienced this bloom. This study measured the phosphorus mass accumulation rate (PMAR). in five cores from low-productivity regions of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. All cores exhibit a peak in productivity 4-5.5 Ma, coincident with the Indo-Pacific bloom.

Piston cores from fiords, shelf troughs, and the deep-sea off eastern Baffin Island, N.W.T., Canada, have been sampled for texture and detrital carbonate in the <2 mm fraction. The sediments consist primarily of silty clays usually containing <5% sand. Estimates are made for sediment accumulation (kg/m**2/ka) over the last ca. 10 ka. Three sets, of two cores each, lie on a fiord-shelf transect and thus define variations in sediment accumulation gradients.

Carbonate precipitates recovered from 2,000 m water depth at the Dolgovskoy Mound (Shatsky Ridge, north eastern Black Sea) were studied using mineralogical, geochemical and lipid biomarker analyses. The carbonates differ in shape from simple pavements to cavernous structures with thick microbial mats attached to their lower side and within cavities. Low d13C values measured on carbonates (-41 to -32 per mill V-PDB) and extracted lipid biomarkers indicate that anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) played a crucial role in precipitating these carbonates.
