Greenland

As shown by the work of Dansgaard and his colleagues, climate oscillations of one or so millennia duration punctuate much of glacial section of the Greenland ice cores. These oscillations are characterized by 5?C air temperature changes, severalfold dust content changes and 50 ppm CO2 changes. Both the temperature and CO2 change are best explained by changes in the mode of operation of the ocean. In this paper we provide evidence which suggests that oscillations in surface water conditions of similar duration are present in the record from a deep sea core at 50?N.

High-resolution magnetostratigraphic analysis of three sediment cores from the base of the volcanic seamount Vesteris Banken in the Greenland Basin and one core from the Jan Mayen Fracture Zone revealed records of three pronounced geomagnetic events within the last 200 ka. Dating by stable carbon and oxygen isotope analysis, AMS14C measurements and biostratigraphic data (foraminifera abundances) yielded ages of 28-27 ka for the Mono Lake excursion, 37-33 ka for the Laschamp event, and 189-179 ka for the Biwa I event.

Evidence is presented from ODP Hole 893A, Santa Barbara Basin for possible synchroneity between Greenland and California Margin submillennial climate change records during Termination 1 and the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Planktonic foraminiferal isotope and faunal records are compared to the GISP2 d18O records (Greenland) for the interval between 30 and 10 ka using a new chronology, based on 38 planktonic 14C dates.

From 1950 through 1900 studies on the glacial geology of northern Greenland have been made in cooperation with the U.S. Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories. As a result of these studies four distinct phases of the latest glaciation have been recognized. The last glaciation extended over most of the land and removed traces of previous anes. Retreat of the ice mass began some time previous to 6000 years ago. This was followed by a rtse in sea level which deposited clay-silt succeeded by karne gravels around stagnant ice lobes in the large valleys.

During the period May to August 1960, an Air Force scientific field party conducted earth science studies and tested a raised sand terrace, located about 224 km south of Station Nord, Northeast Greenland. The operation staged from Thule Air Force Base was climaxed by successful test Iandings on the terrace by C-119 and C-130 aircraft. Significant data were obtained from related investigations on a typical arctic lake, ice-free soils, meteorology, engineering geology, geomorphology, and electrical resistivity of soils.

Intercomparison of three new chemical ice core records from northern Greenland (covering the time span from approximately 1500 A.D. to present) with previously published records for southern and central Greenland reveals a uniform timing of anthropogenic changes in sulfate and nitrate firn concentrations over the entire ice sheet. The anthropogenic sulfate increase started around 1890, was interrupted by a transient decrease in the 1930s, and has resumed a major increase since 1950. Since the late 1970s though, a significant 30% decline in Greenland sulfate firn levels can be documented.

Isotopic composition of strontium and oxygen and strontium concentrations from 4 hydrographic sites in Scoresby Sund Fjord and 6 rivers draining the adjacent Jameson Land have been investigated. Schuchert Flod, the major river on Jameson Land, erodes a large celestite (SrSO4) deposit. Dissolved Sr in Schuchert Flod has 87Sr/86Sr = 0.7137 and is responsible for most of the continental Sr flux to the fjord. The Sr isotope data have been used to construct a mixing model for the surface water in Scoresby Sund Fjord.

High-resolution stable oxygen and carbon isotope analyses and detailed sedimentological and geochemical investigations were performed in order to (i) reconstruct the paleoclimate and paleoceanography of the Greenland Sea associated with late Quaternary glacial-interglacial cycles, and (ii) to link the terrestrial and deep-sea climatic records.

These time series present combined statistics on detailed revenues and expenditures for all levels of government. These time series data provide information on the balance of payments among countries and geographical areas of the world.
