Mediterranean Sea

Time-series of downward alkenone fluxes have been investigated at 200 m depth over a one year sediment trap experiment, in the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea. Alkenone flux maxima occurred in autumn and to a lesser extent in May, during the spring bloom. Temperature estimates calculated from the UK'37 index revealed that alkenone producers preferentially develop in subsurface waters (at about 50 m) in spring, whereas the autumn alkenone production occurred upper in the water column (around 30 m).

The Messinian was a time of major climatic and paleoceanographic change during the late Cenozoic. It is well known around the Mediterranean region because of the giant anhydritelgypsum sequence and the suggested desiccation of the Mediterranean Sea. However, this interval is less constrained outside the Mediterranean region, where several paleoceanographic changes could have taken place because of the desiccation.

Under modern conditions, the reoxygenation of eastern Mediterranean deep water is the result of the formation of dense bottom water in the southern Adriatic Sea. Oxygen isotopic records of planktonic foraminfera used as a paleosalinity tracer show that Po River and/or the alpine glaciers meltwater are not directly responsible of the inhibition of the deep water formation in the Adriatic, during sapropel (S1) formation at 9,000 years B.P..

Isotopic ratios of Sr and Nd from lithogenic components of three isochronous core sections recovered from an east-west transect in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea (EMS) have been analyzed. The data are used for a quantitative estimate of the temporal and spatial variation of detrital flux to the EMS, assuming Saharan dust and Aegean/Nile particulate matter as dominant end members. It was established that the carbonate-free Saharan dust flux during deposition of the nonsapropel layers of marine oxygen isotope stage 5.4 (MIS 5.4) was similar to the present flux.

Monthly measurements of pH, alkalinity and oxygen over two years (February 1998-February 2000) at the Dyfamed site in the central zone of the Ligurian-Proven?al Basin of the Mediterranean made it possible to assess the vertical distributions (5-2000 m) and the seasonal variations of these properties. Alkalinity varies linearly with salinity between surface water and the Levantine Intermediate Water (marked by a maximum of temperature and salinity). In deep water, total alkalinity is also correlated linearly to salinity, but the slope of the regression line is 15% less.

Data on large particles (LP; >0.15 mm), phytoplankton communities, vertical fluxes, and hydrology were collected between January 1992 and June 1996 in the NW Mediterranean Sea, during DYFAMED, an interdisciplinary program part of JGOFS France. LP concentrations at the study sites were typical for values found in other open-ocean studies. LP temporal evolution showed an annual cycle. Concentrations were the highest in winter/spring (20-120/l, 5-280 mg/m**3) and lowest in summer and autumn (0-20/l, 0.8-60 mg/m**3).

The coordination of the project was undertaken by the Institute of Marine Biology of Crete and involved collaboration with 40 scientists from seven other laboratories (Netherlands Institute for Sea Research, National Centre of Marine Research in Athens, University of Genova, University of Tromso, Southampton Oceanography Centre, University of Crete and the Laboratory of Marine Microbiology in Marseille) representing six of the European Union countries.

Detailed pollen analyses and oxygen isotope records of three foraminiferal species, Globigerina bulloides, Uvigerina peregrina and Cibicides pachyderma, from the Semaforo and Vrica composite sections (Crotone, southern Italy) have been compared to the global climatic changes depicted by late Pliocene-early Pleistocene foraminiferal d18O records of Site 607 in the North Atlantic, and Hole 653A in the Tyrrhenian basin, West Mediterranean.

The relationship between mesoscale hydrodynamics and the distribution of large particulate matter (LPM, particles larger than 200 ?m) in the first 1000 m of the Western Mediterranean basin was studied with a microprocessor-driven CTD-video package, the Underwater Video Profiler (UVP). Observations made during the last decade showed that, in late spring and summer, LPM concentration was high in the coastal part of the Western Mediterranean basin at the shelf break and near the continental slope (computed maximum: 149 ?g C/l between 0 and 100 m near the Spanish coast of the Gibraltar Strait).

Pore fluids from two ODP sites at Eastern Mediterranean mud volcanoes have been analyzed for their Cl concentration and their delta18O and deltaD isotopic composition. The Cl data span a wide range of concentrations, from extremely depleted with respect to seawater (as low as 60 mM) at the crest of Milano dome (site 970) to strongly enriched (up to 5.4 M) at Napoli dome (site 971). Chloride enrichment is known to be due to dissolving Messinian evaporites, whereas the source of the low-Cl fluid is deduced from stable isotope data presented here.
