The data files contain information relating to services the subject had received for emotional, behavioral, drug, or alcohol problems. Respondents were asked if the subject had ever stayed overnight in a hospital, treatment center, group or foster home, detention center, jail, or emergency shelter because of emotional or behavioral problems, as well as because of drug or alcohol problems. If so, the age of the subject the first time it happened was recorded along with whether such an overnight stay happened in the past year.

The data files contain information regarding subjects' depression including the effects these feelings may have had on the subject such as feeling sad all day, not being able to enjoy anything, feeling irritable, making concentration difficult, feeling "no good," changes in eating habits, feeling tired, changes in sleep patterns, thinking about death, or attempting suicide.

The data files contain information related to the subject's language use. They include whether the subject spoke any language other than English and what those other languages were, what language the subject spoke at home, what language the subject spoke at school, how many of the subject's classes were taught in a language other than English, how many of the subject's tests were taken in a language other than English, what language the subject spoke with friends, and with what language the subject was most comfortable.

A set of interviewer impressions was completed by the interviewer at the end of each interview with a young adult (YA). In each, the interviewer was asked to rate YA behavior during the interview, the likelihood of the YA participating next year, difficulty in locating the YA next year, whether difficulties communicating hindered the interview, and problems with the interview, including the presence of others or the YA's understanding of the questions. There is also an assessment of the type of dwelling unit for which the interviewer rated both the interior and exterior of the home.

A set of interviewer impressions was completed by the interviewer at the end of each interview with a subject (SP). For each cohort, the interviewer was asked to rate SP behavior during the interview, provide the language of the interview, list whether difficulties communicating hindered the interview, and whether there were problems with the interview such as the presence of others. For Cohorts 6, 9, and 12, interviewers also estimated the likelihood of the SP participating next year, as well as the difficulty in locating the SP next year.

In each, the interviewer was asked to rate PC behavior during the interview, the likelihood of the PC participating next year, and difficulty in locating the PC next year, whether difficulties communicating hindered the interview, and problems with the interview, including the presence of others, general problems, or the PC's understanding of the questions. There is also an assessment of the type of dwelling unit.

The data files contain information related to racial or ethnic identity. Respondents were asked if they were a member of one or more than one racial or ethnic group and to identify to which group(s) they felt they belonged. Subjects were asked if they attended religious services and how important religious beliefs were to them. There was also a series of questions related to the most important ethnic or religious group of which the respondent was a member.

The Home and Life Interview contained age-appropriate questions designed to assess the developmental environment of the Wave 3 subjects belonging to Cohorts 0, 3, 6, and 9. These questions were administered to the subject's primary caregiver (PC). Questions were intended to determine the availability of learning aids, such as toys, books, CDs, musical instruments, and games, to the subject at home. Questions directed toward the PC were intended to probe the extent of the relationship between the subject and the PC as well as the PC's overall involvement in the subject's day-to-day life.

The data files contain information regarding the general health condition of the subject. For Cohorts 0 to 12, primary caregivers were asked to give basic physical measurements of the subject, as well as their own impressions of the subject's weight, hearing, vision, and general health. Respondents were also asked to list the number of days the subject's physical or mental health was not good in the past month and how many days this kept the subject from doing his/her usual activities.
