Water temperature measured in Independence Bay, Pisco, Peru

Independencia Bay can be considered as one of the most productive invertebratc fishing grounds worldwide. One of the most important exploited species is the scallop (Argopecten purpuratus) with strong catching fluctuations related to El Nino and La Nina events and to inadequate Management strategies. During strong warming periods annual landings reach up to 50000 t in an area of about 150 km**2 and during cold years they remain around 500 to 1000 t.

Strontium isotope ratios of fish teeth from ODP sites in the central North Pacific

Strontium isotopic compositions of ichthyoliths (microscopic fish remains) in deep-sea clays recovered from the North Pacific Ocean (ODP holes 885A, 886B, and 886C) are used to provide stratigraphic age control within these otherwise undatable sediments. Age control within the deep-sea clays is crucial for determining changes in sedimentation rates, and for calculating fluxes of chemical and mineral components to the sediments.

Shape-invariant multibeam backscatter data of the eastern slope of the Porcupine Seabight (50 m grid size)

In this study multibeam angular backscatter data acquired in the eastern slope of the Porcupine Seabight are analysed. Processing of the angular backscatter data using the 'NRGCOR' software was made for 29 locations comprising different geological provinces like: carbonate mounds, buried mounds, seafloor channels, and inter-channel areas. A detailed methodology is developed to produce a map of angle-invariant (normalized) backscatter data by correcting the local angular backscatter values.

Sea-bed photographs (benthos) from the Weddell Sea along two ROV profiles during Polarstern cruise ANT-XIII/3

Young specimens of cf. Pagothenia borchgrevinki were observed for the first time to cling to the subsurface of the marginal ice shelf in Drescher Inlet, southeastern Weddell Sea. Along an approximately 40-m-long videotransect at 80 m water depth, the abundance was roughly estimated to be 7 individuals per 10 m**2. This behaviour is interpreted to represent the most advanced adaptation to ice as a microhabitat for Antarctic fish.
