Site 723 is located in a water depth of 808 m at the center of the oxygen minimum zone and the middle part of the main thermocline on the Oman Margin. Oxygen isotope curves of planktonic delta18OP and benthic delta18OB can be traced back continuously to Stage 23 with high resolution measurements. A tentative correlation to Stage 53 has been tried using oxygen isotope stratigraphy. The amplitudes of the fluctuations of the benthic delta18OB curve are small, compared with the planktonic delta18OP curve.

Subpolar North Atlantic proxy records document millennial-scale climate variations 500,000 to 340,000 years ago. The cycles have an approximately constant pacing that is similar to that documented for the last glacial cycle. These findings suggest that such climate variations are inherent to the late Pleistocene, regardless of glacial state. Sea surface temperature during the warm peak of Marine Isotope Stage 11 (MIS 11) varied by 0.5? to 1?C, less than the 4? to 4.5?C estimated during times of ice growth and the 3?C estimated for glacial maxima.

The sediment cores 225514 and 225510 were recovered from 420 and 285 m water depth, respectively. They were investigated for their benthic foraminiferal delta13C during the last 500 years. Both cores were recovered from the southern flank of the Skagerrak. The delta13C values of Uvigerina mediterranea and other shallow infaunal species in both cores indicate that organic matter rain rates to the seafloor varied around a mean value until approximately AD 1950 after which they increased.

The carbon isotope ratio (delta13C) and cadmium content (Cd/Ca) of benthic foraminifera shells have been used to reconstruct deep-water circulation patterns of the glacial oceans. These tracers co-vary with phosphorus in the modern ocean because they are nearly quantitatively regenerated from sinking biological debris in the upper water column. Hence they can be used to reconstruct the distribution of labile nutrients in glacial water masses.

Isotopic and sedimentologic data from Ocean Drilling Program hole 704A suggest that isotopic stages 7, 9, and 11 were marked by unusually strong interglacial conditions in surface waters of the southern ocean. During interglacial stages 9 and 11, warm surface waters penetrated far poleward and may have led to destabilization of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. In contrast, the strongest glacial conditions in surface waters of the subantarctic South Atlantic occurred during oxygen isotopic stage 12.

Oxygen-18 records of benthic foraminifera from the Atlantic Ocean are significantly different from those of the Pacific and Indian Oceans indicating that the Glacial North Atlantic Deep Water was about 1.3?C cooler than today because different deep water sources appeared in the North Atlantic Ocean during glacial times. The present study seeks to interprete carbon-13 records of planktonic and benthic foraminifera as a tracer of the cycle of the CO2 dissolved in surface and deep water of the ocean during the last climatic cycle.

The Southern Ocean is perhaps the only region where fluctuations in the global influence of North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) can be monitored unambiguously in single deep-sea cores. A carbon isotope record from benthic foraminifera in a Southern Ocean core reveals large and rapid changes in the flux of NADW during the last deglaciation, and an abrupt increase in the NADW production rate which immediately preceded large-scale melting of the Northern Hemisphere ice sheets.

Planktic and epibenthic foraminiferal delta13C records at Site PS62/015-3 (southwestern Greenland Sea) reveal a series of transient events of extreme 13C depletion down to -6 per mil during the period 90-40 ka. Scanning electron microscope studies of the ultrastructures of foraminiferal tests suggest that 13C depleted specimens are affected by some 10-20% overgrowth by authigenic calcite contributing to the light delta13C signal.

Live (Rose Bengal stained) and dead benthic foraminiferal communities (hard-shelled species only) from the Pakistan continental margin oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) have been studied in order to determine the relation between faunal composition and the oxygenation of bottom waters. During R.R.S. Charles Darwin Cruises 145 and 146 (12 March to May 28 2003), 11 multicores were taken on the continental margin off Karachi, Pakistan. Two transects were sampled, constituting a composite bathymetric profile from 136 m (above the OMZ in spring 2003) down to 1870 m water depth.

Oxygen and carbon isotope records from benthic and planktonic foraminifera are presented for the past 35,000 years in the northeastern Atlantic.
